May as well mention a little about the subway as long as I'm thinking about it. We took it home tonight from school. Although it was only my second time using it, I was struck once again at exactly how quiet it was. One would think for a city of millions upon millions of people that at least it'd be noisy. I get the feeling though, that's it's rude to draw that much attention to yourself. This is my kind of country. I'm not one for large obnoxious people from anywhere, so I was rather pleased to walk into a crowded subway again tonight to find myself able to think easily with little if any noise. It's not just the subway too.....it's that way on the streets or any other place. People go about there business, but never in to rowdy a fashion. No car horns for every imaginable thing either, like in the Philippines. Thank god for that. That's something I won't miss.
I noticed too, or should I say haven't noticed, that almost noone openly stares. I find myself feeling quite at home, other than the fact that I have virtually no idea what people are saying. If anyone stares, it's not for long and there's no gaping jaw that goes with it. It just seems that people glance at us, foreigners, and go on with things. It may just be that I'm in Seoul and they're more used to seeing foreigners, but I'm hoping it's just that staring at people is a little rude here. Ching ching....here's to it being the latter.
School went well today. I travel from one school and group of kids in the morning, to another school and group in the afternoon. They're both the same camps, but just at two schools at the same time. Anyhow....usually my morning group at Dongbuk is sweet, but really rowdy. They don't always exactly pay me much mind when I want them to listen up and pay attention. But today they were pretty good. Hell...it could have been that 3 out of the 10 were gone that made them quiet and nice, but I'd like to think it was my exemplary teaching style....nudge nudge...wink wink :) The other school, Chodong, almost always goes well. They just seem to pay closer attention and I don't have to spend half the time calming them down.
We went to get some groceries at a bigger supermarket afterwards, before catching the subway home. Again, I was struck exactly how helpless a person can feel not being able to read anything or even ask anyone for help. I was reduced to bending over every two seconds trying to examine any and every picture on every label. Hm....something that looks like some sort of noodle with veggies....uh....sure.
Well...almost time for bed. Off to another day with the kiddies tomorrow...
